About the museum
The museum opened in 1899 within the University of Lyon. At first it served to teach art history and archaeology. Today it is attached to the Université Lumière Lyon 2, and it is also a place of mediation and knowledge-sharing open to the city.
It is housed in former industrial premises in the 3rd arrondissement. The collection includes nearly 1,600 plaster casts, faithful full-size copies of famous statues, bas-reliefs and statuettes. It reflects the development of Western sculpture from archaic Greece to the 19th century. A selection of 200 casts is presented on a themed route.
