About the museum
The Lyon Dental Museum was founded in 1979 by three dentists from Lyon who were passionate about the history of their profession. It has been housed by the Faculty of Odontology of the Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 since its beginnings, with the support of successive deans, and has established itself as a reference among dental museums.
The collections include objects from the 18th century to the present day, many old books and documents, a remarkable series of dental chairs and treatment units showing how surgery ergonomics evolved, and some twenty display cases of instruments for dentistry, surgery, prosthetics and dental radiology. A period dental surgery and a prosthetics laboratory have been reconstructed, and a storeroom holds equipment from the 20th century.
On the second floor, the museum also has a library of around 5,000 titles. It is open to everyone but is aimed mainly at professionals and people with a strong interest in the subject. In 2018 it received the Braye collection as a donation, presented at the Musée des Sciences médicales in Rillieux-la-Pape.
