About the museum
The association Karreg Hir, founded in 1985, campaigned to promote seaweed harvesting, which gives this coastal community its distinctive character. Thanks to donations, it built up a collection, mainly tools of the goémonier trade, along with photographic archives and testimonies. The écomusée des goémoniers et de l'algue opened at the same time as the Fête des goémoniers, held each year on the Koréjou site.
The association also owns two traditional seaweed-gathering boats, the Karreg Hir and the Fleur des îles, restored by volunteers and labelled as boats of heritage interest (bateaux d'intérêt patrimonial).
The ALGAE centre opened its doors on July 18. It presents the history, uses and future of seaweed, and reports on the scientific and economic news of the Breton seaweed sector.
