About the museum
The paleontology museum is part of the scientific heritage of the Université de Bretagne Occidentale. It is housed in building D of the Faculty of Science and Technology in Brest, near the practical teaching rooms, and is used for teaching paleontology.
The collection brings together invertebrate fossils from the Cambrian to the Quaternary, vertebrate fossils from the Tertiary to the Quaternary, and prehistoric tools. It has 276 drawers and 22 display cases, supplemented by many specimens in storage and a cast of an ichthyosaur in a neighbouring room. An inventory and a stock check were carried out in 2011. Some pieces are also shown in four cases on the fourth floor of building G, alongside older books.
The collection is shown to the public during open days. Each year it is visited by the Bellevue paleontology club, and it serves as the basis for thematic exhibitions in various places in Brest. Guided visits are possible.
