About the museum
The Écomusée des mines de fer de Lorraine is run by the association AMOMFERLOR and comprises two sites that can be visited: the Neufchef mine museum and the one at Aumetz. The Neufchef site is recognized by the French state as a Musée de France.
At Neufchef, a 90-minute guided tour follows the evolution of miners' work between the 1830s and the 1980s in genuine iron-mine galleries. The 800-meter underground route illustrates 150 years of mining. The museum complements the tour with three exhibition rooms, one of which was fully renovated in 2014.
The collections cover the geology of the iron-ore basin, the smelting of ore with a large 1:16-scale model of a blast furnace, miners' trades and safety, and social and family life in the mining housing estates. The museum also presents a collection of 250 miners' lamps, described as the most complete in France, and filmed testimonies from former miners. Mining and rail vehicles can be seen freely outdoors on the pit-head area (carreau).
