About the museum
The center is run by a non-profit association of the same name, founded in 1993. It initially brought together civil-society initiatives that had been active in Dudelange since the late 1980s against emerging xenophobic currents. For “Luxembourg, European Capital of Culture 1995,” it presented the exhibition project “Itinéraires croisés” on the effects of migration, using the “Forge du Sud” as an example. Since then, a tripartite agreement has linked the association with the City of Dudelange and the Ministry of Culture.
The CDMH is based in the Gare-Usines on the edge of the Quartier Italie (the “Petite Italie”), which emerged at the end of the 19th century alongside the steel industry and documents the lives of foreign workers. One idea was a “museum without walls” extending beyond the railway station into the neighborhood. As this project was never realized, the center offers walks through the historic districts of the town instead.
The center researches migration in Luxembourg and the Greater Region, collects archives on the subject and runs a specialized library with more than 12,000 volumes and 130 journals. It organizes conferences, exhibitions, publications and educational projects, belongs to the Minett Tour network and, since 1995, has been a member of the Association of European Migration Institutions.
