Temporarily closed. The Papegaut tower, which housed the museum, has been closed to the public since 2022 under a danger order. Restoration work is underway and no reopening date has been announced.

About the museum

The Papegaut tower was built at the end of the 14th century by Raoul VII of Montfort. It is the last remnant of the defences of the medieval town. The tower and ramparts have been listed as historic monuments since 1926.

The Département handed the tower over to the commune in 1977. Rehabilitation work took place between 1978 and 2011, which made it possible to set up an écomusée, recognised as a Musée de France in 2003.

The commune’s collections include costumes, a collection on rural small trades, ethnographic objects, dolls in traditional costume and toys made from natural materials. The largest holding is that of the photographer Charles Legendre, active from 1905 to 1938, with more than 11,000 photographs.

A danger order has barred access to the tower since 2022, after stones fell inside. The town is restoring the building and is preparing, with museum professionals, a future cultural project.
