About the museum
The museum was first inaugurated on July 24, 1912 in Saint-Cyr-l’École by the President of the Republic, Armand Fallières, under the name Musée du Souvenir. It was largely destroyed during the bombings of 1944, then moved to Coëtquidan in 1945 with the return of the military schools. It was inaugurated again on July 23, 1967 at its present location on the Cour Rivoli.
From 2017 the museography was renewed: the rooms were reorganised, with new display cases, a timeline and a digital terminal. In 2018 the Musée du Souvenir took the name Musée de l’Officier, to reflect that its subject concerns all officers, whatever school they came from.
The collections comprise about 2,000 objects: paintings, bronzes, weapons, uniforms, emblems and trophies. They evoke famous figures such as Napoleon, Lyautey or de Gaulle, but also more modest officers who fell on the field of honour. The museum is attached to the Saint-Cyr Coëtquidan military academy, and an association of friends, founded in 1982, supports it and runs its shop.
