About the museum
When the after-school building (bâtiment périscolaire) in Obermodern was constructed, the mayor at the time, Georges Leonhart, proposed fitting out the basement as a museum. Robert Frauli, a railway enthusiast, displays the models he has been building for more than forty years. Jean Scholler presents the collection with scenery and moving parts. The museum opened on April 1, 2007.
The first room shows railway equipment donated by Monique Omphalius: tools used by track-laying crews, caps, ticket inspector’s equipment, old tickets and lanterns. There is also a sectional model, at one-third scale, of the 141 R 73, the last steam locomotive to run in Alsace, shown in motion, as well as the Hoerth signal box.
The second room brings together some thirty locomotives. The oldest, at 1:20 scale, reproduce Prussian-type engines from 1870 to 1918 that ran in Alsace-Lorraine. Next come models at 1:10 and 1:8 that run on 18 meters of track, emitting smoke, and a 4-meter-long 1:5 locomotive that can run on steam. A full-size driver’s cab and a 1:20 steam depot from the 1930s complete the visit.
