About the museum

The museum occupies the former synagogue of Bouxwiller, a classical building dating from 1842 in the centre of town. Abandoned as a place of worship, the building was due to be demolished in 1983. This threat led to the founding of the association AMJAB, which carried the museum project forward together with the public authorities. The museum opened on June 28, 1998, after about ten years of preparation.

Gilbert Weil designed the museum and chaired the association. The route presents the history and culture of Alsatian Jews, who lived alongside their Christian neighbours for nearly a thousand years, and aims to encourage the preservation of this heritage.

Objects are displayed in handmade wooden showcases, with wrought-iron figures, ceramic dioramas of everyday life, dolls in costume, architectural models and films. Several life-size mannequin scenes, inspired by old engravings, show for example a peddler with his cow or a wedding. A full-scale reconstruction of the former oratory and a medieval stele from Strasbourg complete the visit. The museum also has an activity room and a room for temporary exhibitions.
