About the museum
The Offwiller Museum of Folk Arts and Traditions, also called the Maison du village, occupies a farmhouse dating from 1782, with its barn. It presents the housing and daily life of worker-farmers in the Vosges foothills in the 19th century. The collections were gathered gradually by residents and come from village families.
The visit evokes a way of life built on frugality, work, traditions and festivals. The large room, called the Gross Stub, is the heart of the house; the kitchen is filled with old utensils. Upstairs, documents tell the story of the village, its social and religious life, the local costume and many everyday objects.
In the barn, visitors encounter the woodworking trades that the nearby great forest sustained: woodcutters, carpenters, clog makers, joiners and coopers. A complete set of tools also shows how fabric was made from flax and hemp. The cellar holds barrels, a press and stills.
The museum also presents the Schieweschlawe, the ritual of throwing flaming discs at the equinox, which residents keep alive every winter. An adjoining exhibition room hosts exhibitions on specific themes at regular intervals.
