About the museum

The foundation was created on May 9, 2006 and recognised as being of public utility. Its mission is to preserve the historical heritage of the Pathé company, founded in 1896 by Émile and Charles Pathé, and to make it accessible to the public. Its collections bring together posters, advertising documents and printed matter, cinema equipment and accessories, a library, the company archives and the films produced and distributed by Pathé until 1929.

The headquarters are on Avenue des Gobelins, on the site of the former Théâtre des Gobelins, which became a cinema in the 20th century. The building, designed by the architect Renzo Piano, has kept the façade sculpted by Rodin and opens behind it onto a five-storey glass shell. It opened to the public on September 10, 2014.

The foundation presents exhibitions, programmes of silent films accompanied on piano in the Salle Charles Pathé, and a permanent gallery of equipment. A study room, open by appointment only, allows researchers to work with the collections.
