About the museum
The origins of the collection date back to 1946, when an exhibition of patients' works was held at the Sainte-Anne hospital. In 1950, the International Exhibition of Psychopathological Art brought together around 2,000 works from 17 countries and laid the foundations of the Sainte-Anne Collection. Collective creative workshops were opened at the hospital in 1954.
Between 1994 and 1996, the works were rediscovered, gathered and inventoried; the venue was then called the Musée Singer-Polignac. A scientific and cultural project was drafted in 2010. In 2016, a ministerial order awarded it the “Musée de France” label: it is the first hospital museum devoted to art to receive it.
The museum is run by the Centre d'Étude de l'Expression, an association recognized as being of general interest that also carries out research, documentation and training in art therapy. It holds more than 1,800 inventoried works, French and foreign (notably from Brazil, India and Japan), as well as a study collection of over 70,000 productions from workshops. Since 2021, the entire collection has been available to consult online.
