About the museum
The Reichstett fort is part of the ring of forts the Prussians built around Strasbourg after 1870. The original plan called for 36 forts, but only 14 were built. Work on this fort began in May 1872 and ended in 1874. It was first named Fort Moltke; after the First World War it was renamed after the French general Jean Rapp.
It is a dry-moat fort in the shape of a pentagonal lunette, built entirely of Vosges sandstone. Its interior covers about 4.5 hectares and has around a hundred rooms. A gorge barracks could house up to 800 men. The fort also includes a large central gallery, casemates and several powder magazines; a replica of a 150 mm gun from 1875 stands in its original position.
The fort was decommissioned in 1968, then cleaned and restored in the early 1990s. It has been listed as a historic monument since 2001. The association Patrimoine et Histoire de Reichstett organises the guided tours.
