About the museum
The Institut Giacometti is the exhibition and research venue of the Fondation Giacometti in Paris. It opened in 2018 in the Montparnasse district, where Alberto Giacometti lived and worked throughout his career.
The building is the former mansion and studio of decorative artist Paul Follot, built between 1912 and 1914 at a transitional point between Art Nouveau and Art Deco. It is listed as a historic monument. Architect Pascal Grasso, working with heritage architect Pierre-Antoine Gatier, fitted out the institute’s 350 m², keeping the old decorations and adding contemporary elements that are clearly distinct.
The visit includes a reconstruction of Alberto Giacometti’s studio, with its furniture, personal objects, walls painted by the artist and works, some of which had never been shown before. The institute also presents four temporary exhibitions a year, houses a research library on modern art reserved for researchers, and offers tours, workshops and courses for all audiences.
