About the museum
Auguste Comte (1798–1857), French philosopher and founder of positivism, lived in this third-floor apartment from 1841 until his death in 1857. He continued his work here, which argues that human progress rests on science rather than religion. After his death, his disciples looked after the apartment.
From the 1950s onwards, an international association devoted to Auguste Comte gradually turned the apartment into a museum. The rooms were reconstructed from an inventory of the philosopher's possessions and decorated in the Empire style.
The visit passes through the kitchen, dining room, salon, study, bedroom and portrait room. Highlights include Comte's desk, his bookcases and the blackboard he used for teaching.
