About the museum

Eugène Delacroix moved on 28 December 1857 into the apartment at 6 rue de Furstemberg, where he lived until his death on 13 August 1863. When the owner ended the occupant’s lease in 1928, the painters Maurice Denis and Paul Signac founded, together with historians and collectors, a society of Delacroix’s friends to prevent the demolition. The museum opened in June 1932 with the exhibition “Delacroix et ses amis”.

The apartment was put up for sale in 1952, and the society could not buy it. The State then accepted the apartment, studio and garden as a donation and committed to opening a museum there. The site became a national museum in 1971. It has been attached to the Musée du Louvre since 2004 and has been part of the network of Maisons des Illustres since 1 January 2016.

The garden was reconstructed from period documents. The collections include paintings, sketches, drawings, prints, lithographs, personal objects and palettes, as well as manuscripts and letters. The library holds more than 2,200 volumes.
