About the museum
The Maison de la photographie Robert-Doisneau is located in Gentilly in the Val-de-Marne department, the photographer's hometown. The building, one of the oldest in the town, was built in the 18th century by Jesuits as a country house. It later became the Hôtel du Paroy, before being abandoned and bought back by the municipality in 1985.
In 1992, for Robert Doisneau's 80th birthday, the town gave the building his name and turned it into a place dedicated to photography. Doisneau died in 1994, and the house opened with the exhibition “Est-ce ainsi que les hommes vivent…”, which brought together photographers from many countries. It now belongs to the Grand-Orly Seine Bièvre public territorial body.
The house does not hold Doisneau's work, which is managed by his studio. Each year it presents several temporary exhibitions devoted to humanist photography, past and present. It also runs the “La photographie à l'école” project with children, and its modest collections include prints from this project and the photography collection of the municipal contemporary art fund of Gentilly.
