About the museum
The Maison de la pierre et du ciment is in the heart of the quarrying basin of northern Isère. Its museum trail of about 250 m² tells the story of the region's stones, the history of the techniques and of the people who worked this material, from past to present. Villebois stone was used in part to build famous structures such as the Panthéon or the bridges of Lyon.
Part of the museum is devoted to cement, the world's most widely used building material: the Espace Louis Vicat traces its industrial history and presents the challenges ahead, between technical innovation, production and environmental questions. Some local stone deposits are quarried by the Vicat group.
The visit is complemented by the Maison de pays, which recreates the interior and daily life of a 19th-century dwelling.
