About the museum

The municipal Maison de Nostradamus museum was founded in 1992 and has held the “Maison d’écrivain et de patrimoines littéraires” label since 2006. It occupies part of the house that Michel de Nostredame, known as Nostradamus (1503–1566), bought in 1547 in order to start a new family. He completed his works there and died there in 1566.

The 45-minute audio guide presents Nostradamus as a 16th-century physician and astrologer, at once scientist, philosopher and poet. It also covers his contacts with figures of his time, such as Rabelais, Catherine de Médicis or Adam de Craponne. The audio guide is available in 5 languages, and the printed text in 17 languages. Temporary exhibitions of original 16th-century documents complement the route, and a shop with a bookshop rounds off the visit.

At the foot of the Empéri castle, the Jardin des simples de Nostradamus (herb garden) was created in 2003 for the 500th anniversary of his birth, with the plants he used in his recipes. Admission is free. A resource center created in 2006 welcomes researchers and students and runs educational workshops.
