About the museum
The museum opened in 1949 on the initiative of Georges Baussan, founder of the association Les Amis du Vieux Saint-Cannat. It grew through successive donations from the Suffren family and a few acquisitions. For a long time it was housed in the town hall, where the Bailli de Suffren was born; since 1999 it has been located in the Espace Suffren, avenue Pasteur.
The route comprises four rooms. The first pays tribute to Georges Baussan and his closest collaborators. The Vieux Saint-Cannat room shows, through engravings, old books, farm tools and paintings, fifteen centuries of village history and recalls the 1909 earthquake. The room dedicated to the Bailli de Suffren brings together many mementos of the frigate Suffren, of which Saint-Cannat was the sponsor town. The last room displays costumes from Lower Provence, Arles and Parisian fashion, as well as objects and photographs on the history of the Notre-Dame-de-Vie church.
The museum is run by the association Les Amis du Vieux Saint-Cannat. It also offers guided tours, exhibitions and lectures, and takes part in Museum Night.
