About the museum

The Maison du Bocage occupies a former country house that was converted into a farm in the 19th century, in Sains-du-Nord in the Avesnois. For a long time the site served as a branch of the Écomusée de l'Avesnois, which presents the rural life and crafts of this region in northern France.

The museum explains the bocage landscape of the Avesnois, made up of meadows surrounded by hedges, along with its uses, such as cattle farming and cheese-making, and its biodiversity. The exhibitions are housed in the former cowshed; a barn made of wood and wattle-and-daub houses a forge that illustrates ironworking in rural life. A permanent exhibition is devoted to bees, with a glass beehive.

Outside, old agricultural machines are on display, and a path lets visitors observe the hedges. The educational botanical garden includes a landscaped area, a semi-wild zone with a pond and a barefoot trail, a trial garden, an ethnobotanical garden and a heritage orchard.
