About the museum
The Maison du patrimoine of Villard-de-Lans occupies the former town hall in the village center, in the Vercors. The town hall left the building in 1982 for former schools, and the premises were then converted into a museum. According to the commune, the museum was founded in 1988 by Jacques Lamoure; today it is a fully renovated municipal museum.
The museum tells the story of the Quatre Montagnes area and the daily life of rural communities on the Vercors plateau at the beginning of the 20th century: agriculture, forestry, then the rise of the village as a climatisme resort (a health resort movement) and a destination for mountain tourism.
The visit is spread over three levels. The first floor (rez-de-chaussée) has two rooms for temporary exhibitions, on heritage or art, renewed regularly. The second floor (premier étage) covers the Resistance, the climatisme era, the 1968 Winter Olympics, road building and the beginnings of tourism and transport. The third floor (deuxième étage) is devoted to daily life, agriculture and crafts of the late 19th century, with documents, photographs, objects, tools and farm equipment.
The museum also takes part in local life with events, notably during the European Heritage Days, and welcomes school groups and visitor groups.
