About the museum
The porcelain manufactory was founded in the 18th century at Vincennes, then moved to Sèvres in 1756 under the protection of Louis XV and Madame de Pompadour. There it produced dinner services, vases and decorative objects for the courts of Europe, and developed celebrated porcelain techniques such as Sèvres blue.
After the Revolution, it became a state establishment. Alexandre Brongniart, appointed director in 1800, founded a museum in 1824 to bring together ceramics from all periods and countries; today it is the Musée national de Céramique. Its collections are among the richest of their kind in the world.
The manufactory is now part of the Cité de la céramique – Sèvres & Limoges, a public institution under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture. The manufactory still produces art craft pieces and works with contemporary artists and designers. The museum is closed for renovation until 2030, while some workshops remain open to visitors.
