About the museum
The museum was founded in 1939 by Dr. Albert Besançon, its first curator, to bring together varied collections on the cultural and industrial heritage of Boulogne-Billancourt; it was first housed in the town hall. From 1983, his successor Emmanuel Bréon refocused the holdings on the 1930s. The institution took the name “musée des Années 30” in 1994 and moved to the Espace Paul-Landowski in 1998.
The collections grew notably through the orientalist art holdings assembled for the “Coloniales” exhibition in 1989–1990. Since 2017, the museum has also housed the collections of the former Paul-Landowski museum-garden, devoted to the sculptor who left his mark on the city.
The route covers 3,000 m² and displays about 800 paintings, 1,500 sculptures and 20,000 drawings, along with furniture, ceramics, posters and architectural documents. Cross-cutting themes such as traveling artists, the renewal of sacred art, landscape and portraiture offer a view of creation between the wars. The museum holds the Musée de France label.
