About the museum

The Saint-Vaast mill, on the banks of the Canche, was founded in the Middle Ages. It belonged to the counts of Saint-Pol, then to the Prince of Soubise, before becoming state property in 1773 and being returned to the Rohan-Guémené family. In 1866 a new owner modernized it with rollers; then the Noël-Hébant and Petit-Noël families fitted it with a turbine in place of the waterwheel between 1905 and 1921. The commune of Frévent bought back the building in 1953.

After a long period of neglect, the mill was completely renovated and converted into a museum from 1994. It has been open to the public since 1998 and also houses the Frévent Tourist Office.

The museum presents the agricultural heritage of the Ternois across around 24 rooms, with numerous farming and milling tools, photographs, plans and models. One part is devoted to the Wintenberger company, founded in 1837 by the mechanic and founder Bernard Wintenberger, which made agricultural machinery in Frévent. Demonstrations recall the work of the horse era, such as threshing, grinding wheat and braiding ropes.
