About the museum
The municipal museum was founded in 1837 on the initiative of Bruno Danvin, a physician for epidemics, scholar and founder of the town library. After his death the collections moved several times and were partly dispersed; in 1887 some of the works were sold at auction. In 1904 Edmond Edmont saved part of the heritage by installing it in the town hall.
Since 1967 the museum has occupied the former chapel of the Sœurs Noires on rue Oscar Ricque. Franciscan nuns dressed in black had settled in Saint-Pol in the early 15th century; the current chapel dates from its rebuilding between 1751 and 1767 and has been listed as a supplementary historic monument since 1945. It was restored in 1995, and its roof in 2002.
The collections include paintings, sculptures and faience, and since 1991 an archaeology section with objects from the Magnicourt-en-Comté necropolis. The museum also holds modern art bronzes, lithographs from the bequest of Baron Alphonse de Rothschild in 1899, a lapidary section, and objects of folk art and traditions. In 2016 the most remarkable works were transferred to the Henri Picot cultural center, which presents the Danvin-Picot museum.
