About the museum

The museum is the successor of a small village museum set up in 1909 in Bry-sur-Marne town hall. It takes its name from Adrien Mentienne (1841–1927), a former mayor, historian and local archaeologist who gave the town its first mementos and historical objects between 1909 and 1912. The present museum was created in 1973 and received the Musée de France label in 2003.

The collections cover local history (archaeological furniture, mementos of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 and the Battle of Champigny, old photographs and postcards), Louis Daguerre and photography (daguerreotypes, photographic equipment, magic lanterns, stereoscopic views) and the fine arts, including the holdings of the painter Maurice Joron.

Most of the collections are kept in storage. The museum makes them known through two permanent displays: the Maurice Joron space, inaugurated in 2010, which presents more than 150 works by this portrait painter, and a display on Daguerre in the town hall lobby. Temporary exhibitions take place at the Hôtel de Malestroit, and online content complements the offer.
