About the museum
The museum was founded in 1973 by the Société historique de Villiers-sur-Marne (local historical society). It is named after Émile Jean, co-founder of the association. It occupies the first floor of a 19th-century building erected on the site of a former manor house; the upper floors house the town's Micro-Folie.
Fully renovated and redesigned, it reopened to the public in 2024 with a new organisation. It is now run by the AVHEC Guillaume Budé association, together with the Paris Est Marne & Bois territorial authority.
The collections, built up over the years by successive leaders of the historical society, recreate everyday life in the Brie region: school, sport, politics, religion, trades (joinery, metalwork, viticulture, baking), ways of life of the different social classes and the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. Temporary exhibitions are held throughout the year.
