About the museum

The idea for the museum came from Alexandre Renaud, a pharmacist and mayor of Sainte-Mère-Église after the Liberation. Between 1956 and 1958 he sought funds from American and French authorities to create a memorial to the airborne troops. The first pavilion, shaped like a parachute, was inaugurated on June 6, 1964; it houses a restored Waco CG-4A glider from 1943. The museum is run by an association under the French law of 1901.

Between 1975 and 1977 an aviation enthusiast donated a Douglas C-47 Skytrain, the type of aircraft that dropped the paratroopers on the night of June 5–6, 1944; a second building was built to house it. The “Opération Neptune” pavilion was inaugurated on June 5, 2014, and the Ronald Reagan conference centre opened in 2016.

From 2020, the museum renovated its spaces with the support of the European Union and the Normandy Region: the Neptune hall was redeveloped in 2021, and the C-47 pavilion then received an immersive trail. For the museum’s 60th anniversary and the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, a fifth building devoted to American gliders was added in 2024. It houses a permanent exhibition on the Occupation and the Resistance in the Sainte-Mère-Église area, and the grounds have been entirely redesigned.
