Temporarily closed (expected until 2027-04). The museum is closed for renovation and redevelopment. It is due to reopen in April 2027, with a weekend of events from Friday, April 2 to Sunday, April 4, 2027. In the meantime, the collections can be viewed on the collections portal of the Musées de Normandie.

About the museum

The museum occupies the Maison du Grand Quartier in Valognes, a Renaissance house originally built to house the workshop and home of a dyer. A document from the Pays d'art et d'histoire mentions the dyer Jean Frollant, who died in October 1589 and whose services were used by the lord of Gouberville in the 1550s. In the 18th century the house became a barracks housing cavalry troops, which gave it its name. It has been listed as a historic monument since 1975.

The building has kept most of its old volumes: a large semi-underground vaulted hall that served as a workshop, a spiral staircase in a tower, monumental fireplaces and mullioned windows. It overlooks the river at the back.

Across twelve rooms, the Musée régional du cidre presents objects and tools linked to cider production, from picking to drinking: cider presses, stills, pottery, old costumes and sound displays. It underwent renovation work in 2023 and 2024, followed by a second phase from 2025, and is due to reopen in April 2027 with a renewed route.
