About the museum

Utah Beach was the first beach attacked by the Allies on the morning of June 6, 1944; more than 23,000 American soldiers landed there during the day. The museum opened on June 6, 1962, on the initiative of Michel de Vallavieille, then mayor of Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, who had gathered objects to pay tribute to the men of the landings.

The building was extended several times: an octagonal room for a model in 1964, a screening room in 1984, a panoramic room between the beach and the museum in 1994, and then a major renovation in 2011 with a hangar and a room for temporary exhibitions.

Today the 3,000 m² permanent exhibition follows ten sequences, from the German coastal defenses and the Occupation in the Cotentin to the Utah Beach artificial harbor and the advance towards Cherbourg. An authentic B-26 Marauder bomber is displayed in the hangar, and a documentary film retraces the operation. Several memorials stand around the museum.
