About the museum

The pottery of Betschdorf, made of salt-glazed stoneware (grès au sel), was already on display in regional museums such as the Musée alsacien in Strasbourg and the one in Haguenau. In 1982 the town decided to create its own museum to promote this local craft.

The museum occupies a half-timbered house from the early 18th century, a former farm with its outbuildings. It is devoted to salt-glazed stoneware, whose gray and blue tones have characterized the village's production since the 18th century. The collections include mainly traditional utilitarian objects.

The route traces the history of local craftsmanship and of the potter families. It includes a reconstructed potter's workshop, a video projection on making a pot and temporary art exhibitions. The visit is self-guided, with audio guidance via headphones. The museum holds the “Musée de France” label.
