About the museum
The Musée alsacien grew out of a project launched at the beginning of the 20th century. The Société du Musée alsacien held its founding assembly on November 3, 1902 and bought a building at 23 Quai Saint-Nicolas in 1904. The museum opened on May 11, 1907. The City of Strasbourg took over the institution in 1917, and it now forms part of the Musées de Strasbourg.
The museum occupies three neighbouring houses built in the 17th century on the banks of the Ill, whose façade and roof are partially protected as historic monuments. They were linked and enlarged between 1969 and 1985.
The collections comprise more than 50,000 works and objects from the 18th to the 21st century, including a holding of Judaica and more than 10,000 pieces of costume. The route is organised by theme: housing, clothing, rites of passage, beliefs, the festivals of the year, work, health and portraits of residents.
The museum has been closed for works since July 2025. According to the official schedule of the Musées de Strasbourg, the closure lasts until June 2028.
