About the museum

The Strasbourg City History Museum was founded in 1920. It occupies the former Grande Boucherie, a building erected in 1586–1588 on the banks of the Ill between Place de la Cathédrale and Place du Corbeau, now listed as a historic monument.

After a long closure for renovation work, the museum reopened in 2007 with the first part of the route, up to 1800. The floor devoted to the period from the Napoleonic era to the present day opened in November 2013, so all rooms have been accessible since then.

The route tells nine centuries of the city’s history, from the Middle Ages to the creation of the European institutions, with some 1,700 works and objects on display, as well as playful and digital features. It focuses on the daily life of residents in every era. The best-known piece is the plan-relief (scale model) of 1727, a large model of the city commissioned by Louis XV. The museum also runs a programme of guided tours and events for local residents.
