About the museum

The Departmental Archaeological Museum of Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges was created in 1985, when the Société archéologique du Midi de la France transferred its collections to the Haute-Garonne Departmental Council. It is the successor of the “Musée de Comminges”. Linked to Lugdunum, the former capital of the Convenae, it holds objects from excavations of the ancient site and carries the “Musée de France” label.

The building is in the upper town. A former private house that later became a boarding house, and then a gendarmerie at the end of the 19th century, it now houses an exhibition room and a specialist library in ancient history and archaeology. The lower garden presents the archaeological site; the upper garden hosts a seasonal exhibition on current research. A renewed display has been presented since January 2025.

The collections follow the development of the Roman town and its territory: fragments of colossal statues, an armored emperor, private portraits, architectural blocks, inscriptions, funerary and religious sculptures, ceramics and coins. The Augustan trophy, a set of marble pieces discovered in 1926 and made between 16 and 13 BCE, and the collection of votive altars are its masterpieces.
