About the museum
The Carmes cloister was built by the lord of Jonzac to house a community of Carmelite friars. Sold as national property during the Revolution, it served as a prison until after the Second World War before becoming a cultural centre in the 1970s. It was restored between 1976 and 1978.
The archaeological museum holds objects from excavations carried out in Jonzac in the 19th century and, above all, since the 1960s, ranging from protohistory to Antiquity and the Middle Ages. In summer, the museum was open in the cloister.
According to the town’s website, the museum is to move to the second floor of the cloister, where work is under way. Throughout the year, the cultural centre hosts exhibitions of painting, sculpture and photography, the Micro-Folie de Jonzac and summer lectures.
