About the museum
The collection began in 1965 under the impetus of Louis Lassarade, a primary-school teacher and keen archaeologist, who founded the Société archéologique pontoise, later renamed the Société d’histoire et d’archéologie de Pons et sa Région (SHAPR). The collection grew through digs carried out by volunteers and gifts from private individuals. It was first displayed in educational showcases in the donjon, and in 1995 it moved to the Chapelle Saint-Gilles.
In 2017, with the support of the town council, the museum moved into a healthier and more accessible building, before relocating to the Hôpital des Pèlerins, its current site. Since 2013 it has borne the name of its founder, who died in 2008.
The rooms display finds from excavations in Pons and neighboring communes, from the Palaeolithic to the modern period: prehistoric tools, Neolithic pottery, a bronze axe, grave goods from Celtic burials, Gallo-Roman ceramics and amphorae, medieval pottery from the 12th and 13th centuries, and architectural elements from former buildings in the town. Two large showcases tell the history of Pons and present palaeontology.
