About the museum
The church of Saint-Pierre in Vienne is one of the oldest Christian buildings in France: its structure and plan date back to the late 5th century. Originally dedicated to the apostles Peter and Paul, it was remodeled several times and in the Middle Ages housed the tombs of many bishops of Vienne.
In 1809 the church became the municipal museum, displaying the antiquities gathered by Pierre Schneyder. After a major restoration by the City in 1860, about twelve years later it became a lapidarium, with Gallo-Roman sculptures, sarcophagi and fragments of ancient buildings.
The museum has been closed to the public since late 2022. The Isère department took over the City’s project under a framework agreement signed in April 2022: the church, the former church of Saint-Georges and the Maison Boullu are to form a Departmental History Museum of Vienne of about 4,000 m², devoted to the history of the city from prehistory to modern times, with nearly 900 works in the permanent display. The timetable announced in 2022 foresaw an opening at the end of 2027.
