About the museum

The Musée des Beaux-Arts et d'Archéologie de Vienne (Museum of Fine Arts and Archaeology) opened in 1895 on the first floor of a former grain hall built in 1823 on the Place de Miremont. Its collections date back to the late 18th century and grew in the 19th century through excavations, donations, purchases and state deposits.

The museum has kept part of its original display cases and hangs its paintings densely, in the style of the 19th century. It is one of the city's museums and holds the “Musée de France” label.

The archaeological collections include, among others, everyday objects from Gallo-Roman times, the bronze statue of Pacatianus, a gilded bronze relief with dolphins found in the Rhône, the silver treasure from the Place Camille-Jouffray and a silver casket from the Colline Sainte-Blandine. There are also medieval pieces, one of the most important collections of French faience in the Rhône-Alpes region, and paintings from the 16th to 19th centuries, with a particular focus on local production.
