About the museum
The Musée de l’industrie textile in Vienne tells the story of an activity that dominated the city’s economy for several centuries. The local specialty was carded-wool drapery, notably the so-called “Renaissance” fabrics, which sustained most of Vienne’s population for more than two centuries.
The museum is housed in a former textile factory in the Gère valley, in the historic district of the cloth industry. The trail, both technical and thematic, follows the full production cycle of cloth, from raw wool to finished fabric. It presents a collection of machines, several of which are still in working order, as well as many samples from the main Vienne manufactories.
The museum also explores the lives of workers and the history of drapery. It belongs to the City of Vienne’s museums and offers educational, thematic and guided visits for schools and groups.
