About the museum
The museum grew out of the collection of Auguste Grasset, from La Charité-sur-Loire. In 1862 he moved to Varzy and added his own objects to the library-museum founded a few years earlier in the town by the pharmacist Henri Piffaut. Grasset collected very widely and kept enriching the museum.
Since 1993 the collection has been shown in new, larger premises across three levels around a contemporary hall. The equestrian Saint-Eustache, a masterpiece of Nevers faience dated 1734, welcomes visitors.
Antiquity is represented mainly by an Egyptian ensemble, shown in the cellars together with weapons and ornaments from the South Pacific islands. Upstairs, a chronological route presents art objects, sculptures and paintings from the Middle Ages to the Pre-Impressionists. A music salon lets visitors hear some twenty historic instruments from the 17th to the 19th century. The top level is devoted to the faience of Nevers and Varzy and to a room dedicated to the Varzy painter Rex-Barrat.
