About the museum
The museum grew out of the collection of automotive stylist Philippe Charbonneaux, assembled from the 1970s onward and first displayed in Saint-Dizier. In 1985 it found a home in Reims, in former metalworking workshops, under the name Centre historique de l'automobile française, later renamed Musée Automobile Reims-Champagne.
After Charbonneaux's death in 1998, a volunteer association, the Salon des Collections Automobiles Rémois (SCAR), took over the management so that the collection would remain open to the public. Its name recalls the Société de Construction Automobile de Reims, based in Witry-lès-Reims, and a very rare model from that company is displayed in the galleries.
The route presents vehicles from 1903 to the present day: more than 160 cars, more than 90 motorcycles and two-wheelers, a series of pedal cars, enamelled advertising signs and around 7,000 miniatures. Several models designed by Charbonneaux, such as the Chevrolet Corvette, the Delahaye 235 and the Renault R8 and R16, illustrate his work.
The museum receives no state funding: it relies on admission fees and gift shop sales, and is devoted to preserving the national and regional automotive heritage.
