About the museum
The collections of the City of Reims began to take shape in the 18th century around the drawing school founded in 1748. Its director, Antoine Ferrand de Monthelon, bequeathed his collection, which included a series of portraits by Cranach. After the Revolution, the museum received confiscated property and from 1800 opened to the public once a week. In the 19th century, gifts from Reims notables formed the core of the holdings, including the ceramics of the widow Pommery, Alfred Gérard’s Japanese objects and Henry Vasnier’s bequest in 1907.
The museum moved in 1913 into the former Saint-Denis abbey, next to the cathedral. It suffered bombardment during the First World War and was evacuated in 1939. Paul Jamot’s bequest in 1945 added more than 115 paintings, drawings and watercolours. The collections, which number over 22,000 works, cover European painting, sculpture and decorative arts from the 16th to the 20th century, with Cranach, Corot, the Impressionists, Gallé and Foujita.
Since September 2019 the museum has been closed to the public, first for the move of the collections and then for renovation and extension works designed by the Aires Mateus practice. Exhibition space will be tripled to 3,800 m². Reopening is planned for 2027. In the meantime, the museum offers off-site activities and a “musée nomade” (travelling museum).
