About the museum
The museum is housed in the buildings of the former Saint-Remi abbey, a Benedictine complex near the basilica that is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It brings together the archaeological collections of the City of Reims, partly from the archaeological museum opened in 1893 and from the collection of Théophile Habert, supplemented by objects from regional excavations.
The route through seventeen rooms tells the story of Reims and its region from prehistory to the Renaissance. On the ground floor you can see the 18th-century cloister, the Romanesque chapter house with capitals carved around 1130, and Reims in the Gallo-Roman period, with the sarcophagus of Jovin. On the second floor are the tapestries of the life of Saint Remi, remains of the abbey, regional prehistory and protohistory, Merovingian collections, medieval sculpture and a section on military history.
The museum is one of the five municipal museums of Reims. The tapestries of Saint Remi, completed in 1531, were restored with the help of patrons.
