About the museum

The Musée barrois was founded in 1841 by the departmental architect Théodore Oudet in an encyclopedic and educational spirit: it gathered every form of human creation, including paintings, sculptures, antiquities, natural history specimens and curiosities. It was first housed in the Hôtel de Florainville; after World War II its collections were spread across the town hall.

In 1862 a gallery devoted to famous military figures from the Meuse was added. In 1966 the collections of the Société de Géographie de l'Est joined the museum; they form a very rich ethnography section. The museum then moved to the former castle of the dukes of Bar in the Ville haute and reopened to the public in 1974.

The circuit comprised thirteen rooms: paintings and sculptures from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, natural history, decorative arts, weapons and armor, archaeological objects from Nasium, works by Ligier Richier, faience from Les Islettes and a sculpture by Ipoustéguy. A 12th-century Taíno zemi is among the most precious items.
