About the museum
The Saint-Dizier municipal council approved the museum project on November 4, 1869, and a first display took place at the town hall on January 24, 1870. The war of 1870 interrupted the project for about ten years, and the objects were returned to their donors. The museum reappeared at the town hall in 1881 and became the property of the city in 1884. The Second World War dispersed part of the collections, and the museum partially reopened in 1950.
On June 19, 1964, the museum moved into the former hôtel des Postes, a 19th-century townhouse on rue de la Victoire, next to the town hall. It closed from October 2007 to February 2013 for interior renovation and a review of its collections. It has held the “Musée de France” label since 2002.
The collections comprise more than 30,000 objects. Archaeology is a highlight, with grave goods from three aristocratic Merovingian tombs and a Merovingian treasure, including a ring sword decorated with runes. The museum also holds art castings from Val d’Osne, with works by Mathurin Moreau, Isidore Bonheur and Hector Guimard, ornithological collections, paintings, and a pre-Columbian mummy brought back from Colombia in 1892.
