About the museum

The Clos de Sampigny is the summer residence of Raymond Poincaré (1860–1934), President of the Republic during the First World War. The house, in neo-Louis XIII style, was built between 1905 and 1913 by the architect Charles-Désiré Bourgon. In 1914 it was bombarded by German troops stationed in Saint-Mihiel.

After Poincaré’s death, his widow Henriette lived there until 1943; the property was then bequeathed to the General Council of the Meuse. From 1947 to 1981 it served as an orphanage for boys. The site was then turned into a biographical museum: the collections were assembled from 1985 and the museum was founded in 1986. It celebrated its fortieth anniversary in 2026.

The route presents presidential gifts, photographs, personal belongings, sound and audiovisual archives, as well as newspapers, posters, postcards and caricatures. The terraced garden, with its orchard and apiary, is part of the visit.
