About the museum
The Musée Charbonneau-Lassay is housed in Loudun in an 18th-century mansion in the oldest district of the town, near the Porte du Martray and the church of Saint-Hilaire. It is named after Louis Charbonneau-Lassay (1871–1946), a local scholar, archaeologist, historian, engraver and collector, whose bequests make up a large part of the collections. The museum bears the “Musée de France” designation.
As in a cabinet of curiosities, visitors discover archaeological objects from the area and beyond, old books, swords and firearms. The collections sit alongside 19th-century paintings, including works by the Loudun painter Carl Rosa (1853–1913), pieces of Loudun folk art, a room devoted to famous personalities of Loudun, and a collection of African art with ritual masks and everyday objects from Burkina Faso, linked to Loudun’s twinning with Ouagadougou.
