About the museum
The Musée de Richelieu occupies the second floor of the town hall. It opened on November 25, 1961 and bears the Musée de France designation. Cardinal Richelieu, a discerning collector, owned one of the most important collections of paintings and sculptures of his time at his château in Touraine; part of these works is shown in the museum.
In 2011, the exhibition of national interest “Richelieu à Richelieu”, devoted to the entire collection of the cardinal in his château, led to a new display. It highlights works from the château, which no longer exists, among them six authentic canvases from the Grande Galerie des batailles.
Since 2018, a large model has been on display in the museum. Through its size and the quality of its craftsmanship, it helps visitors understand the town in the 17th century and its layout with the park and château the cardinal wanted.
